Creating a Successful Social Media Strategy Part 1: Facebook

FACEBOOK BUSINESS PAGE, facebook for business, facebook page tips, facebook business tipsFacebook is everywhere. Some people practically live on the social networking site. At the end of 2012 the California company said it had more than a billion active users. It’s hard to ignore anything being used by that many people! A business that does not have a Facebook page could be hurting itself.

Business owners may wonder if they need a Facebook page. According to a recent Daily Deal Media article, 65% of small businesses say that social media helps them stay engaged and connected with customers. Social media is one of the easiest, fastest, and most influential ways to transmit and receive information. In the past, people may have reached for a phone book when trying to get in touch with a business, but now people turn to the internet and more specifically, to social media. A Facebook page allows your business to be found by consumers. It’s just another tool you can use to attract new customers.

Creating a page for your business is just as easy as setting up a page for yourself. Just visit www.facebook.com, look at the bottom right-hand corner of the page and you’ll be able to click on the text that says “Create a Page for a celebrity, band or business.” Next you’ll click on the box that reads “Local Business or Place.” Fill out the requested information and you’ve begun the process.

Your next steps are to fill out your “About” section completely, including your contact information, hours of operation, and a keyword-rich description of your business and products/services. Next, you’ll want to make your profile picture and cover image match your brand. Your profile picture, ideally, should be your logo. After getting the page set up, it’s time for you to invite your friends and family on Facebook to ‘like’ your new page and help spread the word!

Making a Facebook business page is relatively easy, but you should ask yourself an important question before you jump in: What do you hope to accomplish with the page? Getting found by potential customers should be at the top of your list. Think of your business as a valuable piece of real estate that needs to be showcased. Facebook allows you to do just that.

Reaching out to and engaging with current and potential customers comes next. In order to do that successfully business owners need to create a sense of community. Achieving that can be tricky so business owners should keep these things in mind.

  1. Be sure to interact with your followers. Be fun, helpful, and answer any questions you’re asked. And don’t be afraid to offer advice when you feel it’s needed.
  2. Keep your followers informed. Give them a sneak peak at new products or services. Provide them with perks like coupons or discount codes. Doing this make your fans feel special and will inspire loyalty. Curate resources your audience will find valuable.
  3. Make your page inviting. You need to give people a reason to visit and come back. The Bigelow Tea Facebook page is a good example of this.  Anyone who visits the page will see different tabs, including one marked: “recipes.” Clicking on the tab leads people to different types of recipes which then leads fans to the Bigelow Tea website.
