Did you notice Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus (Zuckerberg’s babies) were all down for roughly 6 hours on Monday? I giggled profusely and sent a link with a gif to my brother, dad, friends, and even a few clients and team members. Truth be told, I didn’t want it to come back online, but I realize people panic when social disappears. Let’s talk about why…
Honestly, technology has taken over our lives. Facebook came on the scene in 2004 and quickly became the go-to place for people to connect, share thoughts and life, and over the years it has become the first place many check for news from the world or from their trusted circles.
We have become addicted to connecting on social medias.
So much so, that when Facebook and Instagram go dark, people RUN to Twitter or Linkedin… because it’s all they know. All we know is connecting through social medias.
But if you’ve been paying attention to my story at all, you know I finally jumped the social media ship last year. Yes, I still have profiles on all the places, but I do not check daily and do not post out of a compulsion.
Instead, I own and publish my content on my site, and send it out via email to subscribers each week. I’ve harnessed the power of my email contact list to stay connected.
And, guess what? It’s working.
I’ve seen a resurgence in clients from the past circling back for more help and higher response and open/click rates because that is where they keep the pulse on what’s happening with Propel.
May I encourage you to own your content and your contact lists, too?
Whether that means you shift to more consistent blogging where you own your content and images and thoughts, and you make it work for your SEO and website favor. Or, you simply begin utilizing email marketing more regularly, you have the power to not be beholden to the Zuck (or any other social platform) with the possibility of losing all your hard work if and when the next outage happens.
Food for thought. 😉

I am so grateful you opened my eyes and showed that it is possible to leave social media without collapsing. I am grateful for my clients reaching out. By emailing regularly I am reaching people that do not have facebook and are not on social media. I appreciate your weekly messages. Keep up the great work!
I’m so glad to have been a positive force in your business and life, Christine. And I am proud of you for taking the leap and trusting your email marketing strategy. 🙂
I like it, Jamie! Monday made my day, and your permission slip feels like the icing on top. 🙂
it made my day, too! 🙂
