Finding A Good Bookkeeper

If you’ve ever heard me speak on entrepreneurship or starting a business, then you’ve heard my rant about finding a good bookkeeper. I’ve known a few bad ones but that only honed my interviewing skills and led me to work with my last two amazing professionals. When the last one moved his practice to Washington and I found Vicki, there was no doubt I would chain myself to her for the long haul.

I’m the first to admit, math isn’t my strength. That said, I could reconcile and budget and work on numbers all day long just to whittle through every possibility and get every penny accounted for. Neat and tidy books are a thing of beauty, especially when it comes to tax season.

But I’m also a huge proponent of not spending too much time on an admin task that I am not getting paid to do. If it takes me hours to handle my books each month because I get sucked into the depths, it is better for me to outsource and pay a professional who can get in, get out, and get on with things. That way I can book a strategy call and make money instead.

For that reason, finding a good bookkeeper was the first contractor I looked for back in 2010. Fast forward to today, I still believe it is important to know your books inside and out because God forbid an accident happen, you would be left to pick up the pieces on your own.

Picture painted, imagine my sigh of responsibility when my trusty, dear bookkeeper Vicki shared she would be retiring. I wasn’t sure what the future held for me, but I was sure happy for her. Trusting that the right person would come along, I put my feelers out there and found Vicki’s replacement and just in the nick of time – thank God!

Is there a part of your business you shouldn’t be doing because you spend too much time in it? Do you struggle with a weakness you know you should outsource but just can’t seem to pull the trigger?

Let me just say this…

From one business owner to another, it’s worth the time it takes to think through the questions you might ask, systems you could delegate, and time you could save. Just think of all the other hats you ultimately wear as an entrepreneur. Where would your time be better spent?

In my experience, finding a good bookkeeper is blessing, and I have been blessed to have Vicki. For the next season I now I get to work with Jill and I’m grateful she has taken the reigns alongside me.
